It's so sad, flooding everywhere. Imagine losing everything you had worked hard for, to flood. Water is good but too much water is dangerous. Farmers are losing their livestock and it's very stressful to accept. Flood in Kenya, Tanzania and all over the globe 🌐. 

Floods pose a significant threat to poultry farmers, leading to devastating losses and disruptions in their operations. Poultry farming is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of flooding due to the sensitive nature of the birds and the infrastructure required for their care. One of the most immediate and severe consequences of flooding for poultry farmers is the loss of livestock. Floodwaters can quickly overflow poultry houses, causing drowning and suffocation of birds unable to escape. Even if birds manage to survive the initial flooding, they may be exposed to cold and damp conditions leading to stress, illness and increased mortality rates. Also flooded facilities may become contaminated with pathogens, further compromising the health and welfare of the birds.

Moreover, floods can damage essential infrastructure and equipment vital for poultry production. Poultry houses, feed storage facilities and equipment may be submerged or damaged by floodwaters, rendering them unusable or requiring costly repairs or replacements. Access to feed and clean water may also be compromised during flooding, affecting the nutritional needs and health of the birds.

The economic impact of floods on poultry farmers can be substantial, with losses incurred from decreased production, increased mortality rates, property damage and recovery expenses. Furthermore, the ripple effects of flooding on the poultry industry can extend beyond individual farms to impact supply chains, market prices and consumer access to poultry products. Reduced supply resulting from flood-related losses may lead to price fluctuations and shortages in the market thus affecting both farmers and consumers alike.

In response to the threat of floods:

☑ Poultry farmers must implement proactive measures to mitigate risks and safeguard their operations. These measures include :

  • implementing flood-resistant building designs,
  •  improving drainage systems, 
  • raising poultry houses above flood-prone areas and 
  • developing emergency response plans to evacuate birds and minimize losses during flooding events.


☑ Collaborate with government agencies, disaster management organizations and community stakeholders, so as to enhance flood preparedness and response efforts in the poultry farming sector. By working together to address the challenges posed by floods, poultry farmers can better protect their livelihoods and contribute to the resilience of the poultry industry in the face of natural disasters.
